Max Ernst was a German water-colourist, sculptor, striking artist, as well as a poet. Ernst was a key inventor of the Dada programme as well as surrealism. Max Ernst had no recognised artistic preparation, but his tentative assertiveness toward artwork gave rise to his discovery of frottage and grattage techniques.

The frottage technique discovered utilizes pencil chafing of articles as a foundation of images but grattage is an analogous technique in which paint is rubbed across the canvas to divulge the trajectories of the objects placed underneath. Max Ernst was inspired by his father Philipp who was a teacher of the deaf and an incompetent painter. Philipp interest in painting and sketching swayed Max to take up the portrait and by 1909, Ernst registered in the University of Bonn to study art history, poetry, psychology and psychoanalysis.

Max visited asylums and became spellbound with the artwork of the psychologically ill patient and began his painting journey in the same year. He began by producing sketches and portraits of his beloved sister and himself. It was not until 1911 when Ernst befriended August Macke who later allowed him to join his Die Rheinischen Expressionistic group of artists. He later visited the Sonderbund display in Cologne, where he was influenced by the artworks of Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. Max artwork was unveiled together with the Rheinland assemblage, at Galleria Feldman in Cologne.

In his watercolours, Ernst implemented an ironic elegance that contrasted ridiculous elements in conjunction with Modern and Expressionist styles. Lots of Ernst artwork have been praised by many for having amazing design and remember, he utilises the artistic skills listed above to produce marvellous and highly designed watercolour.
